Figaro BENETEAU 3 Sails the Annapolis to Newport Race, Taking First in Class
This weekend, 52 boats left Chesapeake Bay docks to sail in the 38th edition of the Annapolis to Newport Race.The biennial race dates back to 1947 and has since become one of the most historic and well-known races on the East Coast. With fleets as small as 27 and as large as 93 boats, the race draws in sailors from around the world.
Of the 52 boats that joined in on the race this year, one was Figaro BENETEAU 3. The boat was double-handed by owner Laurent Givry and Sidney Gavignet, renowned skipper in France. The boat reached Newport docks at 9:38:09 AM on June 10th, landing first place in the Double-Handed class for the first time ever.
“The success of our journey was determined by two things: First, the sturdiness of the boat in rough seas. Second, the choice of route. We found that by going further offshore, we were able to avoid inclement weather that was closer to the coast. We are really proud of our accomplishment and this boat”, says Sidney Gavignet.
While some sails have retired the race entirely due to mechanical failures or poor conditions, and the remaining have yet to reach the finish line, the Figaro BENETEAU 3 sits safely at the docks in Newport prepping for its return back.
Laurent Givry adds, “Although the race was challenging due to harsh weather, I really enjoyed the pure off-shore sensations, as it was my first time racing outside of the Chesapeake Bay.”
The Figaro line is designed for those who want to develop sailing skills and improve performance. Because of this, it has made some of the best sailors. This year’s race has proven the Figaro BENETEAU 3 to follow brilliantly in the footsteps of its predecessors, the Figaro BENETEAU 1 and 2. For Laurent, who only previously sailed with a full crew, the Figaro BENETEAU 3 has allowed him to improve single-hand technique and discover “true” performance sailing. Whether a new experience seeking individual or a renowned skipper, the Figaro BENETEAU 3 does not discriminate when it comes to the experience of its captain – it is truly a boat for any sailor.
