Description
Be sure to watch the video tour of this unique vessel linked within this listing! M/V Ocean Explorer offers a rare opportunity to own an extremely capable and self-sufficient 4-season vessel designed by the legendary C. Raymond Hunt with hull, decks, and superstructure built of sturdy welded aluminum by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding. Repowered in 2006 with commercial-grade Iveco diesels, multiple generators, water maker, extensive electronics, 1,800 gallons of fuel for a range of up to 1,000 miles, huge open cockpit, drop-down transom, and generous mechanical spaces, make her suitable for various commercial uses, extended cruising, living aboard, or any combination thereof. The package includes a fully-operational spare Iveco engine to have parts on-hand and reduce downtime. There is also a spare Westerbeke generator in storage that could be put into service while servicing one of the other generators. The current 3 stateroom/3 head interior layout is very practical as a crewed, live-aboard working vessel or it would not take much to replace the vinyl cushions with softer fabrics for a more luxurious cruising experience if desired. As-is, she would be an excellent platform for extended dive or fishing charters or as a cruiser for a family with up to four kids that wants to go exploring for a while. The accommodations include an owner/captain cabin with a queenish bed & private head. The two guest staterooms each have two single bunks in an over-under configuration, their own heads and generous storage. All the living spaces are air conditioned with reverse cycle heat as well as separate electric heating systems in each space. The enclosed flybridge has a newer air conditioning reverse heat system. There is potential to customize the interior spaces to better suit your needs and the quality of the hull and mechanical systems would make this type of investment worthwhile compared to building a new custom vessel. A 2021 Valuation & Survey report is available that gives a hull replacement value of $7.5 Million and Fair Market Value of $625K. The current asking price offers a tremendous value for a buyer who appreciates the benefits of Hunt's seaworthy design and Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding's commercial-grade construction. This is a proper vessel for someone who wants to do serious marine work, overnight marine charters, excursion cruising, and/or living aboard with the type of peace of mind that can only come from a vessel designed and built like M/V Ocean Explorer.

Propulsion
The commercial grade 8 cylinder Iveco diesels make 1,000 HP at 2,300 RPM. They have Rolls Royce blocks and are designed to be run nearly continuously for many years. They are commonly used as the main generator engines on European trains due to their reliability and long life.
At around 12,000 hours, it is estimated these Ivecos are about halfway through their expected life if proper maintenance is continued. Most of their hours have been cruising between 8 - 10 knots between jobs and while performing ocean bottom surveys on the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico. At these sub-hull-speeds, one can expect close to a 1,000 mile range. At full throttle one could expect around 24-25 knots with faster cruise speeds in the mid-to-upper teens.
The engines are mated to ZF marine reduction gears Model ZF 550A at a 1.525: ratio to 2-1/2" stainless shafts, through PSS dripless shaft seals, to report four blade bronze 30" x 32" propellors.
Engine controls are electronic from the pilothouse or the cockpit steering station
The current owner has decades of experience in various commercial marine enterprises including fishing, lobstering, surveying and ferry services. Proper preventative maintenance of the diesels and other marine systems is an essential part of being successful and safe on the water. These Ivecos have been under his care since purchased new when he installed them in 2006. The fuel and oil filter holders have been converted to Caterpillar to make routine filter replacements more efficient. Only high grade synthetic diesel oils have been used since new. The package includes many spare parts as well as a complete operational spare Iveco engine stored indoors that can be used as an immediate source of parts to reduce downtime or as a complete engine replacement if ever needed. There is also a spare Westerbeke diesel generator ready to go if needed.
